Kenai, Alaska (KINY) The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly broadened the list of churches and groups that give invocations after a recent court ruling.
The list now includes Christian pastors, atheists, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the Wiccan, and the Satanic Temple, the Anchorage Daily News reported.
The new policy allowed any borough resident to submit a written request to offer an invocation. The Alaska Supreme Court ruled in October that the previous policy violated a ban on the government establishing an official religion or favoring one religion over another. It stated only chaplains that serve agencies or members of a local religious organization could deliver invocations before the Borough Assembly meeting started.
The lawsuit was filed by a member of the Satanic Temple after he was not allowed to give an invocation.
