Action Line: CBJ Assembly incumbents to run for reelection

CBJ Assembly members Mary Becker and Kate Troll have officially announced their intention to run for reinstatement in the October election.

Two Assembly incumbents will seek re-election this year.

One made her announcement on Action Line Friday.

Mary Becker told us she will seek re-election to her District 1 seat.

"Other than turning in my letter of intent and doing my APOC, I haven't really announced it anywhere, so I guess I'll tell you for sure," began Becker. "I'm going to run for my third term, which will be my last if elected because I'll be termed out. I just think that it's something I want to do; just looking at the types of things that are going on in our state, our schools, supporting our new mayor and new city manager, and just trying to be there to do what I can is important to me. I'm kind of excited to be doing it again."

She's wrapping up her sixth year on the Assembly after nine years on the School Board.

Kate Troll has issued a press release announcing she will seek election to her area-wide seat.

"I wanted to give it serious thought because it's a big commitment of time," Troll explained. "I found that I have learned a tremendous amount by being on the Assembly, and there's lots of things I still care about. We've made progress on housing but have more to do there, and we have the Economic Development Plan we're implementing. I just felt that my experience could help move forward on a lot of these important issues facing the community."

There's been no official word from Jamie Bursell, who was appointed earlier this year to the seat vacated by Karen Crane when she ran for mayor in the special election in March. However, we've been told that Bursell has filed a letter of intent with the Alaska Public Offices Commission.

Speaking with News of the North, Karen Crane indicated that she has no plans of running for her former seat.

Both School Board incumbents whose seats are up for election on the October 4 local ballot tell us they will not seek re-election.

Barbara Thurston and Lisa Worl will be guests on the next Action Line program to explain why.

The filing period for the October 4 election opens at 8 am. Friday, August 5 and ends at 4:30 on the afternoon of Monday, August 15th.
