Action Line: Rep. Sam Kito discusses governor's addition of sales tax to session call

While a guest on Action Line Thursday, Juneau Representative Sam Kito pointed out that the Governor has added a sales tax to the session call in addition to an income tax to provide lawmakers with an alternative.

As part of his fiscal plan, Governor Walker wants lawmakers to approve a broad based tax.

While a guest on Action Line Thursday, Juneau Representative Sam Kito pointed out that the Governor has added a sales tax to the session call in addition to an income tax to provide lawmakers with an alternative.

    Kito prefers an income tax.

"We already have a local 5% sales tax here in Juneau, and if we put a statewide 3% sales tax over the top of that, Juneauites would be paying 8% for commodities. The people that are earning less money would be paying a much higher percentage of their income in taxes."

Kito was also asked where the special session will be taking place.

"The latest I'm hearing is that we'll be meeting here in Juneau. There is some discussion of maybe having a committee meeting or two other places, but I have not heard definitively that they would be taking place outside of Juneau."
