Alaska cemetery sinking

Bethel, Alaska (KINY) The final resting place in one Alaska village is not at rest.

The thaw of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta's permafrost has begun to sink the village of Kongiganak's cemetery.  The problem has gotten so bad, some Alaska villages have stopped burying their dead.

Kongiganak has begun putting loved ones to rest above ground.  The village has also looked for money to move the sunken graves to higher ground.  Residents have to wear rubber boots above the knee to visit loved ones in the cemetery.  Another cemetery in Kwigillingok has the same problem with sinking.  Locals say the village itself is sinking.
