Alaska jobless rates steady in March

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Alaska had an unemployment rate of 6.5 percent while Juneau stood at 5.5 percent last month.

    The state continued to gain jobs for the third consecutive months.  The report showed an increase of 1,000 jobs or 0.3% from March 2018.

    The total private jobs rose by 1,200 jobs.  Mining and logging added 300, oil and gas 200, construction 1,100, trade, transportation and utilities 400, education and health 400, and leisure and hospitality 300 jobs.

    Job losses were reported in manufacturing 500, retail 100, financial activities 200, and professional and business services 300 jobs.

    State jobs rose by 100 and local dropped by 100 last month.

    Around the region, Haines had 14.4%, Hoonah-Angoon 19.7%, Ketchikan 7.9%, Petersburg 12.3%, Prince of Wales 14.1%, Sitka, 4.8%, Skagway 18.5%, Wrangell 9.2%, and Yakutat 11.5 percent.  Every borough, with the exception of Petersburg, saw a decline in unemployment during March
