Alaskan clears Senate committee

Washington, DC (KINY) The US Senate Indian Affairs Committee voted unanimously to approve the nomination of Tara Sweeney to be Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs.

Democrats on the committee still want to resolve the issue of Sweeney's role with the Alaska Native Corporation.

Sweeney has agreed to recuse herself from issues like oil and gas drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge but hasn't done so in writing.  So far it has only been a verbal commitment.

US Senator Lisa Murkowski said Sweeney has strong support from native tribes across the country.

There is no date set for when the full Senate will vote to confirm Sweeney.
