A man has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting near two downtown schools Tuesday.
Anchorage police said in a statement that 31-year-old Tommy Rumph was arrested and booked into jail shortly after the shooting at 15th Avenue and C Street.
Police have identified the victim as 30-year-old Treavonne Owens. Authorities say the men knew each other.
Anchorage police are searching for an armed suspect who fired shots Tuesday morning near two downtown schools.
Police at 6:16 a.m. received a report of shots fired at 15th Avenue and C Street.
When they arrived, they found a man dead at the intersection.
The intersection borders the parking lot of Central Middle School and is two blocks from Chugach (CHOO-gach) Optional Elementary School.
Police say the suspected shooter is a black man, 6-feet-2-inches tall, 195 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes whose possible name is "Tommy Rump."
He was seen wearing a long-sleeve, dark shirt with white stripes along the collar bones.
Police say students who arrived early at the schools are being transported by bus to West High School for pickup by parents.
The school district has closed the schools for the day.
