Boat capsizes on Mendenhall Lake

    Two women riding in the boat were uninjured and able to swim to shore following the incident.

    A boat turned over on Mendenhall Lake, but the two people it was carrying are unhurt.

    On Sunday at 4:40 p.m., Alaska State Troopers received a report from Juneau Police Department of a capsized boat on Mendenhall Lake.  30-year-old Kelsey Hagan of Sitka and 36-year-old Karen Smith of Juneau were uninjured and able to swim to shore near west side of the lake by the ice caves.

    They contacted a hiker who called Juneau Police.

    Troopers contacted the boaters who advised they were cold and wet and could not walk back to the trailhead.  

    Troopers contacted Capital City Fire and Rescue who responded by boat at 5:25 p.m. 

    CCFR picked up both females and helped them recover their boat before completing the rescue at 8:29 p.m.
