Bullwinkle’s Pizza is being recognized for their impact on our community, as ACT announces the semifinalists for the 2016 national ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign.

The local Juneau business is one of four national semifinalists in the employers category. There are 3 other national business finalists  - employers from South Carolina, Kansas, and Mississippi.

The finalists also include an impressive array of students, high schools, and community colleges that exemplify efforts to advance college and career readiness for themselves, their students, their employees and their communities.

News of the North spoke with Mitch Falk, owner of Bulkwinkle's Pizza.

"We were nominated by a local high school principal, and I was notified by a press release we've made the final four nationwide," stated Falk. "We offer a scholarship program for part-time employees where, if they maintain a B average over the course of a semester, we reimburse them for tuition. The previous owner, Bill Adair, started this program shortly after starting the business in 1973. My wife and I bought the business eight years ago, and have continued the program. Through the course of the program, we've probably put over 200 people combined through school, and they've gone on to all walks of life; doctors, lawyers, teachers, commercial airline pilots, artists, dancers, you name it."

The website ACT.org says Bullwinkle's is the longest-standing restaurant in Juneau and one of Alaska’s most admirable employers for its strong commitment to supporting education for its workers and local community. The site credits Falk, who bought the business in 2007, for 30 employees receiving scholarships in the past eight years.

The National Exemplars in each category will be announced and celebrated at the 2016 ACT National Gala on College and Career Readiness in Washington, D.C., in late June, where all semifinalists and state exemplars will be recognized.
