There's a call to action from the CBJ Docks and Harbors Department to fight crime at its facilities.

Port Director Carl Uchytil says vandalism and thefts have been a problem, "We're looking to create a kind of neighborhood watch in the Aura Harbor boat basin and we've engaged JPD with helping us facilitate this neighborhood watch. We're looking for members of the boating community that are willing to step up and work on creating safer facilities."

The port director says there has been an increasing amount of vandalism and theft throughout the harbor system.

Uchytil says they advise people to lock vehicles left in parking lots and to purchase a gas cap that locks to prevent crooks from siphoning gas.

He also advises patrons to secure their vessel and gear and to steer clear of storing valuable items in their vehicle or on their boat.

For those out of town for any extent of time, it's advised that they have someone check their vessel.

The port director also suggests that owners register liveaboards with the Harbor Office.

He says harbor officers will be conducting random security patrols.

Uchytil says people should file a report with the police department if they discover any property stolen.
