Canoe Disaster Leads to One Fatality

Juneau, AK (KINY) - An overturned canoe disaster resulted in one fatality on Monday morning.

The incident occurred on the Davidson Glacier River. According to Trooper Dispatch reports, 10 had fallen into the water and had gone into the rapids. The commercial canoe trip had been a touring excursion with Haines AWT. All of the people in the canoe had been wearing personal flotation devices. Responders included State Troopers in Juneau, Haines Police, the US Coast Guard, and local Haines Fire Department medical personnel. A Coast Guard helicopter headed to Skagway was also diverted to the area.

That helicopter helped locate 50-year-old Steven Todd Willis of North Las Vegas, who was found deceased in the water. Willis had been found still wearing a life jacket. His remains were transported to Juneau where they were released to next of kin, who had been an occupant of the overturned canoe.

The other occupants were brought to safety or were able to get out of the water themselves.

River conditions were higher than usual during the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
