Canoe investigation continues

Haines, Alaska (KINY) One person died while nine were rescued when the canoe overturned in a glacier fed river.

A dispatch from Alaska State Troopers identified the victim as Steven Willis, 50, of North Las Vegas, Nevada.  10 people had gone into a rapids area near the Davidson River Glacier Monday morning.  Troopers from Juneau, Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Haines, the Haines Borough Police and Fire Departments and the US Coast Guard all worked on the rescue.  All of the occupants wore life jackets but not dry suits.

A US Coast Guard MH-60 helicopter from Air Station Sitka located the dead man in the water.  The river levels were above normal at the time of the accident.  A rescue swimmer was lowered from the helicopter to reach the unconscious man in the water and brought him to shore.

All of the others rescued had no medical issues. Troopers said eight occupants and the canoe operator were rescued.   An investigation continues into the incident.
