Juneau, AK (KINY) - The Juneau Parks and Recreation department will be getting a new Director in May.
George Schaaf will be bringing the experience he learned from working in public private partnerships where he focused on the expansion of recreation opportunities to the City and Borough of Juneau.
We asked him what he looks forward to bringing to the department.
“I’m excited to be working again for the city, because my wife and I love living in Juneau. We live here because of the quality of life and the Parks and Recreation Department, the folks who work there, do a lot to support our standard of living here.”
“We use the parks, we use the trails, we use the pools, we use the programs that the department offers and I'm really excited to be a part of that again.”
We also asked him what sort of challenges he may face.
“You know I think the challenges I’ll face are the challenges that are facing our entire community. I think that our ongoing recession is certainly having an impact. We're seeing people leave Alaska and seeing the population in Juneau specifically going down a little bit and I think that it's important for us to do everything we can to make our community a place that people want to come to, to live work and raise a family and again that's exactly what the Parks and Recreation Department does.”
Schaaf will become the Director come May.
