Cell phone bill signed into law

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) Governor Bill Walker signed a bill that makes using a cell phone while driving in a school zone illegal.

It is not a mandate.  Boroughs and cities must pass an ordinance to impose a ban.  Alaska already has a ban on texting while driving.

There are exempionts.  For example hands free cellphone use is still legal.  Police also can't site drivers that are talking on their cell phones while the vehicle is parked.

Local governments can impose the ban at any time.
