Coast Guard extending Arctic presence

Coast Guard to set up first long-term base in region.

The Coast Guard is extending its presence in the Arctic with its first long-term base.

Next Saturday, a Jayhawk helicopter will roll in to a hangar in Kotzebue at the Alaska Army National Guard Aviation Facility.

The Coast Guard signed a five-year lease with the National Guard, after setting up seasonal bases in Barrow and Nome the last few years. Melting Arctic Sea ice has brought more activity to Alaska's northern shore, but the closest permanent Coast Guard base is still Kodiak Island.
