Coast Guard medevacs cruise ship passenger near Sitka

    A cruise ship passenger on the Explorer of the Seas in the Chatham Straight near Sitka was medevaced by the Coast Guard Tuesday.

    A cruise ship passenger on the Explorer of the Seas in the Chatham Straight near Sitka was medevaced by the Coast Guard Tuesday.

    The Air Station Sitka helicopter crew hoisted the man and transported him to Sitka, where he was met by awaiting emergency medical services personnel.

    The 57-year-old man was reportedly suffering from stroke-like symptoms.

    Coast Guard 17th District watchstander, Petty Officer 1st Class, Trevor Frommherz, says crews stand watch around the clock in the summer with increased activity on the water.
