Juneau's cruise ship season got underway Saturday morning with the arrival of the Crystal Serenity.

This year marks the 20th year of Juneau's Tourism Best Management Practices program.

Princess Cruises' Kirby Day talked about the longevity of the program while a guest on Action Line Friday.

"A lot of folks remember in Juneau remember back in the 90's when larger ships were replacing smaller ships and we were growing between 10% and 14% for three or four years in a row in terms of numbers of passengers, and it kind of got away from us; there were a lot of impacts. Through a number of different tourism committees and working with the city and a number of different people, we finally decided to see if we can't come up with a program that would basically get all the tour operators and people involved to look at the way they do business in a community and look at doing that business in a more neighborhood-friendly manner to try to deal with a lot of residents' concerns without having to go through legislation."

A hotline remains in place for residents to voice concerns over the travel industry. The hotline can be reached through e-mail or by phone at 586-6774.
