Fairbanks Junkyard to Recieve Cleanup of Hazardous Waste

Fairbanks, AK (AP) - A former junkyard in Fairbanks is going to be getting a cleanup from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Multiple complaints were made in the spring about the former Miller's Junkyard, which is separate from a nearby business operating as Miller Salvage Inc.

The Junkyard was in operation until the early 2000s and contains drums of waste products, automobile parts, compressed gas cylinders and materials containing asbestos, mercury and lead.

Removing those drums and hazardous items are the first steps in this project, officials say that the DEC is using $2.5 million from the state's response fund.
