Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) The 40th and final Great Alaska Shootout College Basketball Tournament is underway.
The women's action began Tuesday night with Tulsa defeating SUNY Binghamton 60-55 and the University of Alaska Anchorage defeating Maryland Eastern Shore, 69-59. The two teams will meet Thursday night in the finals.
The eight team men's bracket opens at noon today with Cal Poly versus the College of Charleston. Alaska Anchorage will take on California State University at Bakersfield in the finale of the first round.
Financial difficulties are one of the main reasons for the decision to halt the tournament. Some future NBA Stars and prestigious universities have played in the tournament over the years including Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Syracuse.
