Juneau, Alaska (KINY) Fire crews moved quickly to put out a fire that broke out on the third floor.
Capital City Fire Rescue reported the first alarms came in just before 11 this morning.
The fire address was reported as 326 4th Street. Crews responded quickly and knocked down the fire by 11:17 am Thursday.
Crews checked the building for any fire extension and injured. The estimate of damage was unavailable and the Fire Marshall will handle the investigation into the cause of the blaze.
The Juneau Police Department and the American Red Cross assisted at the scene. The cause was food on a stove in the kitchen area of one unit. Three people were taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital for evaluation.
CBJ Fire Marshall Dan Jager said crews found smoke coming out of the third floor window, "The building alarm system evacuated and the residents were evacuating. The fire was kept in check by a single sprinkler. We checked the building to make sure there were no hot spots."
During the blaze there were several other medical calls across the borough. Jager said there is a lack of fire resources in times like this, "We don't have enough staff and its a challenge. Off duty personnel helped at stations and responded to medical calls."
The building was insured, but the extent of the fire damage coupled with the water damage on floors below is unknown. Jager tells us that maintenance staff were working to clean up the water in the rooms affected.
