Fire department makes history

    Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) For the first time the Anchorage Fire Chief is a woman.

    Mayor Ethan Berkowitz appointed Jodie Hettrick to the job Wednesday.  She had served as acting chief since Denis LeBlanc retired last month.

    Hettrick had prior experience in jobs with the state Division of Fire and Life Safety, the Alaska Building Science Network, the Valdez Fire Department and the Central Mat-Su Fire Department.  She had been employed by the Anchorage Fire Department since 2012 and served as assistant chief for three years before being promoted to deputy chief in 2015.
