Fishermen convicted of tax evasion

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) A Klawock couple owed close to $300,000 in back taxes.

    Archie Demmert, 57, and Roseann Demmert, 60 both pled guilty to two counts of willful failure to pay income tax before Chief U.S. District Judge Timothy Burgess.  They face up to two years in prison, a term of supervised release, fines, and must pay restitution to the IRS.

    The couple held commercial fishing permits in Alaska for herring spawn on kelp.  Mr. Demmert also had a commercial fishing permit for a salmon purse seine.

    At a hearing Thursday the couple admitted they had not paid taxes for 13 separate tax years.  The couple will be sentenced on October 4th.
