Fairbanks, Alaska (KINY) Three Alaska State Troopers and two Fairbanks police officers fired shots at Cody Eyre, 20, killing him on Christmas Eve after he allegedly pointed a gun at them.
Troopers Elondre Johnson, nearly 15 years of service, James Thomas nearly four years of service, and Christine Joslin, nearly three years, were involved along with Fairbanks officers Richard Sweet, five years, and Tyler Larimer, one year of service.
The investigation is ongoing and the results will be turned over to the Alaska Department of Law, Office of Special Prosecutions to determine if the deadly use of force was justified.
A dispatch from Alaska State Troopers said police responded to the report of a distraught man armed with a gun walking down Marshal Drive off of Skyline in Fairbanks Christmas Eve at 6:21 pm. Officers encountered the man at the intersection of Steese Highway and Johansen Expressway. The Trooper dispatch went on to report that Eyre brandished the firearm around 7:34 pm and the officers fired upon him. Eyre died later at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
