Five Women Overdose in Eagle River Prison, Sparks Investigation

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The Alaska Department of Corrections is investigating after five women overdosed at a prison near Anchorage.

This happened at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center in Eagle River on Monday and Tuesday. There were no fatalities, but four of the women were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Toxicology tests were reportedly taken. The fifth woman was stabilized and kept at the prison.

Corrections spokeswoman Megan Edge says that they are currently unsure how these women obtained the drugs or what drugs they even took. The department did say that prison nurses and correction officers responded quickly.

Edge also that while overdoses do occur in prisons, so many occurring around the same time is unusual. She says the department is taking the matter seriously; the cases are being investigated by an internal unit.
