Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - An ordinance up for introduction at Monday night's Assembly meeting appropriates $75,000 to set up a warming center for the homeless during the winter.
Mayor Ken Koelsch was asked about a location for the center while a guest on Action Line Friday. He said the main focus right now is on the State Public Safety Department Building on Whittier Street. "That's one of the options and that seems like a very logical one." He said the building is mostly empty now. Another option is the Transit Center at the bottom of Main Street.
Funding would come from the fund balance in the Tobacco Tax Fund, but the mayor says donations are coming in. There was a one thousand dollar donation from one of the jewelry stores downtown. The mayor said they're also expected a $4,000 donation from Holland America.
The warming center would be operated when temperatures fall below 32 degrees.
