Juneau, Alaska (KINY) Alaska remained the state with the highest per capita gun death rates in the nation in 2016 according to a new report from the Violence Policy Center.
The gun death rate in Alaska was 23 per 100,000. 56.4 percent of Alaska households owned guns. The report showed 38,658 people were killed across the country by gunfire and 177 in Alaska. The national rate for gun deaths was 11.26 per 100,000. The report went on to show that firearm homicides across the nation rose by 10.6 percent across the nation.
State gun deaths are calculated by dividing the number of gun deaths by the total state population and multiplying the result by 100,000 to obtain the rate per 100,000.
