Hunters find ancient tusk

Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) A woolly mammoth tusk that weighs 177 pounds was discovered by two duck hunters near the village of Shishmaref on the Chukchi Sea coast,

The Anchorage Daily News reported that Justin Schultze and Brandon Nayokpuk thought they had spotted a shiny log while hunting.  Instead, it was a large tusk, likely hundreds of years old.

Climate change has resulted in less stable sea ice and has also unearthed artifacts due to erosion.  Area residents have found mammoth bones and teeth, and a larger tusk was found a couple of years ago.

The two men have already sold the tusk.  About 600 people live in the village, and roughly half have visited the men to look at the tusk.
