Unalakleet, Alaska (KINY) - Nicolas Petit arrived here just before 10 a.m, making the race leader the first to hit the Norton Coast this year.
Petit was also the first to reach Unalakleet in 2018 and was in position to win his first Iditarod championship. However, Petit lost the trail between Shaktoolik and Koyuk. Joar Leifseth Ulsom rallied to overtake Petit and claim his first victory in the race.
Arrival in Unalakleet nets Petit the prize of $1,500 worth of Bering Sea gold and an ivory sculpture.. Petit's team has been the fastest times with a speed of 7.76 miles per hour.
Petit’s team had 10 dogs in harness when he pulled into Unalakleet. Two mushers scratched on Saturday. 10 mushers are now out of Kaltag including Ulsom who is in second place with 10 dogs in harness. Jessie Royer is in third with 13 dogs in harness, Peter Kaiser in fourth with 11 dogs and Mitch Seavey in fifth place with 11 dogs in harness..
