Juneau, AK (KINY) - The Juneau Chamber of Commerce's annual banquet awarded a citizen the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Joseph Kahklen, who started the Goldbelt Corporation, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. He's a native Alaskan and his goal is to bring the community together.
We asked him if he knew he would be recognized for his efforts. . .
"It's a total shock, totally unexpected, a great honor."
Through many years, Kahklen has put his efforts in bringing Native peoples together to tackle issues in Juneau at large.
"I knew if we were going to succeed that we had to become a part of the community and get over the divide. Everything I've done up to this point has been trying to achieve that. We've made progress and this [award] is an indication as well."
He also said that any issue should be properly discussed to reach a solution, or at the least an understanding. He used the recent NFL controversy as an example.
"You know, I've been watching what's been happening in the NFL. We can't hide behind disrespecting the flag. We have to talk about it; if we don't talk about it, we can't solve it."
Kahklen continues to strive to bring people together to make Juneau "one community."
