JPD deputy chief reacts to passage of crime bill fix

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau Police Department was happy to see passage of the crime bill fix in the special legislative session.

Deputy Chief Dave Campbell said on Action Line Wednesday) that there were some unintended consequences as the result of the passage of Senate Bill 91 last year and that time will tell if Senate Bill 54 will correct those issues.

Senate Bill 54 increases penalties for lower level crimes that Senate Bill 91 did away with.

Campbell cited a recent example from earlier this month where a suspect in an assault downtown had been released three days previous on conditions of release for a felony assault.

And the deputy chief said he's heard from his officers that suspects have told them that because of Senate Bill 91 they won't be going to jail.
