This coming weekend is Memorial Day Weekend and when both Juneau high schools host graduation ceremonies.

Juneau Police say that traditionally, Memorial Day Weekend has been a time when they receive more calls regarding alcohol and drug involved behavior, so  JPD plans to take several steps to address the expected increase in calls for service, as well as illegal behavior observed by officers.

Lt. Kris Sell says that includes parking and staffing at the the Mobil Incident Command Vehicle at Eagle Beach, to act as a headquarters for officers patrolling to the end of the road, and deploying additional officers and equipment over the weekend.

Sell says JPD’s new unmarked patrol vehicle begins service this weekend. She described it as a black Ford Interceptor with blue and red lights installed inside the main body of the car, so the patrol vehicle maintains the outline of a civilian vehicle.

Sell also commended the members of the Juneau Citizen’s Patrol who will assist by looking for spots that need to be checked for minor consuming parties and documenting suspicious driving. Sell says, "Those volunteers provide valuable assistance to JPD when the challenge is covering large areas during holiday weekends. JPD would also like to wish everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day Weekend."
