If layoffs prove necessary for the Juneau School District, layoff notices must go out the middle of next month.

Superintendent Mark Miller was asked about the need for layoffs while a guest on Action Line last week, "Letters have to go out by the 15th, but we won't be needing to lay off any tenure teachers and quite honestly, it's looking like we're not going to have to lay off any non-tenure teachers as well. We still have a couple of teachers that need positions, but we expect those to work themselves out and hopefully we can come back. We probably won't be doing a lot of hiring, but it does look like we can maintain our staff without doing layoffs. [There's a] fair number of retirements this year and a fair number of people going out on leave for one reason or another. One of things that's happening that I've heard, it's anecdotal, but a couple teachers say with flat funding it's not likely that we're going to get increases in our retirement or the amount of money we're making towards retirement ,so hanging in there to get a bump in salary for retirement purposes probably doesn't make sense."
