Juneau, Alaska (KINY) The Juneau Assembly heard a report from the Task Force on homelessness Monday and took a step forward on opening a new warming center downtown on cold nights.
The City has discussed the allocation of $75,000 to staff the warming center. The preferred site at this point is the old Public Safety Building.
The full Assembly is expected to vote on the expenditure at their regular meeting on November 6. It is expected that the warming center would be open on November 15. The city has worked on a variety of ways to reduce the homeless population, one of which was the new Housing First project which opened in September and provided beds for over 30 homeless people.
