Juneau, AK (KINY) - A popular recreation spot in Juneau has reopened after extensive improvements were made.
The Lena Beach Recreation Area is now open, just in time for Labor Day weekend. The area was built in the 1950s but had deteriorated over the years. In October of 2017, a renovation effort began as a 1.3 million dollar project that was awarded to Sealaska.
Improvements that visitors can look forward to on the beach include new picnic shelters, a better road, improved accessibility and parking, a new bridge over Picnic Creek, and a small culvert and fish ladder was removed. Removing the fish ladder has already given the salmon the ability to come upstream, as it is a natural salmon stream.
