Local school board member hoping Legislature funds education at reasonable level

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau School Board member Kevin Allen finds Governor Dunleavy's proposed budget that cuts education shocking and very concerning.

The board discussed the Governor's proposal during a recent Saturday retreat and what to do.

During the retreat, Allen said they discussed what a cut of this magnitude would look like.  He said their budget this year exceeds $70 Million and if they had to take on the cut that's being proposed it would be $10 Million to $13 Million less.

Allen said on Action Line that  he's unsure, but somewhat confident that the Legislature will come up with a different plan for the funding of education given the public's reaction to what the Governor proposes

The state budget is sure to be a top subject of discussion during the board's joint meeting with the Assembly Thursday evening.

That meeting gets underway at 5:30 p.m. in Assembly Chambers at City Hall.
