Look Local First Campaign Underway For Holiday Shopping

Juneau, AK (KINY)-Juneau Chamber of Commerce President Richard Burns is asking Juneau residents to Look Local First to support businesses in charitable giving and to make sure the community benefits from sales taxes.

The National Retailers Association estimates Americans will average about $960 dollars of holiday spending this year.  Where those dollars are spent is important to Juneau, according to Chamber of Commerce President Richard Burns.  Burns would like to remind Juneau shoppers that Juneau businesses need to make money if they are to support local sports and charity events.  The Chamber estimates businesses spend between 7 and 12 thousand dollars a year supporting community activities, with some businesses spending up to $150,000.  Burns says an online company is not going to do that or pay local sales taxes.  When the city does not have adequate sales tax revenue, the city has to find other sources of revenue or cut services.  Burns says no one likes either of those options so he asks residents to spend locally.
