Man admits to killing girlfriend

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) Reuben Yerkes agreed to plead guilty to second degree murder and could face 45 years in prison.

Yerkes, 40, was charged in May, 2017 with the murder of his girlfriend of two months Ali Clayton in Sitka.

Police said the two had gone to a party and had an argument in the taxi cab as they went home.  The suspect claimed Clayton continued the argument at their residence, started to strike him, and he pulled out a handgun from a bedside table and shot her.

Police said the victim died of multiple gunshot wounds.  They said alcohol appeared to be a factor in the shooting.

The sentence hearing was scheduled for September.  Mr. Yerkes is expected to be sentenced to 60 years in prison with 15 of the years suspended.
