Man convicted of killing police dog

    Palmer, Alaska (KINY) A foot chase that ended with a police dog dead played out in a Palmer courtroom.

    Almando Abarca, 27, was convicted at trial of attempted murder and felony assault for a chase with Alaska State Troopers last year.

    KTVA News reported that Abarca killed the trooper dog Helo, during a foot chase after he fired several shots that struck the dog.  Troopers fired back and hit the suspect in the shoulder.

    The shooting followed a traffic stop in Palmer where Abarca fled into the woods.  Abarca will be sentenced on May 29th.
