Man in Sleep-Off Center Found Dead Three Hours Later

Juneau, AK (KINY) - A man sleeping off intoxication at the Rainforest Recovery Center was found dead during a routine checkup last Sunday.

According to a JPD press release, medics from Capital City Fire/Rescue arrived and attempted to save the man, without success. He was identified as 57-year-old Juneau resident Steven Jay West.

Upon investigation, JPD learned that West was picked up by the Rainforest Recovery in the downtown area around 1:30pm earlier that day. West was intoxicated, but walking and talking; he was medically cleared and admitted to the sleep off center. Around 4:05pm during a check, staff found West deceased. He was the only person in the sleep-off center during that timeframe.

Police reported that there were no signs of trauma to West's body and foul play is not suspected. The body was sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage for an autopsy.

Next of kin has been notified.

    The investigation is continuing.
