Juneau, AK (KINY) - The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center in Juneau has announced their hours for the winter, as well as a few events to look forward to throughout the rest of the year.
November 6, 2017. The U.S. Forest Service’s Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center will be closed on Friday, November 10 in commemoration of Veterans’ Day. The center will be open on Saturday, November 11 and Sunday, November 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In winter, the center is open Friday–Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., October through March except for federal holidays. There is no charge.
Discovery Southeast’s bookstore, located inside the center, will be open concurrently with the visitor center throughout the winter. The local non-profit became the center’s retail operator in May, 2017.
During November and December, center staff will conduct on-site conservation education field trips for elementary school students. Fees collected during summer will assist with transportation costs between area schools and the visitor center.

Starting in January, the popular Fireside Lecture series returns with Friday night presentations at 6:30 p.m. and repeating at 8 p.m. The first lecture will be held on January 12. The series continues through March 30.
In conjunction with Capital City Fire and Rescue, the Forest Service will host an Ice Safety workshop and demonstration on Saturday, January 13 at 1:30 p.m. This annual tradition educates citizens on safe practices during winter and rescue techniques in the event of falling through lake ice.
