Polls open in Juneau

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) Voters get to elect three Assembly members, two School Board members and decide two ballot propositions today.

    CBJ clerk Laurie Sica said polls are open until 8 pm local time.  She expects the results to be available sometime around 8:40 pm.  Based on early and absentee voting, Sica expects a similar turnout to last year which came in at 33.5%. The Area wide Assembly race pits incumbent Maria Gladziszewski against write-in candidate Andy Hughes.  There are three candidates in the Assembly District One race including incumbent Jesse Kiehl, Chuck Collins and Loretto Jones.  In the Assembly District 2 race, incumbent Debbie White faces a challenge from Rob Edwardson.

    There are three candidates for two School Board  seats.’They include  incumbent Brian Holst, Kevin Allen and Jeff Short. 
    There are two propositions on the ballot.   One extends the temporary one percent sales tax for five years.  The other is a charter amendment relating to competitive bidding that would allow the CBJ managers flexibility in the awarding of contracts.
