Proposed constitutional amendment throws lawmakers out if budget is delayed

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - A proposed constitutional amendment introduced by Juneau Representative Justin Parish penalizes lawmakers if they don't come up with a timely operating budget.

Parish said of House Joint Resolution 40 while a guest on Action Line.  "What it would do is say, 'If there's not a operating budget by day 121 not sitting legislator shall be eligible for re-election for a period of four years.'"

Parish believes HJR 40 is the best of the available solutions.

If approved by lawmakers the proposed constitutional amendment would go to voters for their approval.

HJR 40 was referred to the House Judiciary and Finance Committees.

Parish made his remarks on Action Line Monday.
