Rep. Kito on Juneau Access: not a very fiscally responsible thing to do

There is federal money that has been designated as Juneau Access, that federal money could also be used to replace a marine highway vessel.

Juneau Representative Sam Kito outlined his preference for the delayed revision of the Juneau Access Environmental Impact Statement while a guest on Action Line recently:

"I think at this point it's not a very fiscally responsible thing to do. It's going to cost us more in maintenance money, it's going to make the city and borough of Juneau responsible for emergency services on a section of road that the state would not pick up, and will end still with twelve hours a day of ferry service at the end of the line. So it's making sure that we have a very successfully ferry system with mainliners with feeder vessels and providing support for coastal communities. There is federal money that has been designated as Juneau Access, that federal money could also be used to replace a marine highway vessel."

Release of the revised Juneau Access EIS is pending by the state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
