Rep. Munoz apologizes, wants letters requesting leniency for sexual abuser and convicted mother retracted

Juneau Republican Rep. Cathy Muñoz is apologizing for letters she wrote supporting leniency for a sexual abuser and convicted mother.

She tells the Alaska Dispatch News she wants to retract a pair of letters concerning Thomas Jack Jr. and Mary Chessica Hauge.

Jack faces a 40-year sentence for abusing an 11-year-old girl. Hauge was sentenced to 30 months in prison for child endangerment.

Muñoz  apologized on her campaign website and said she has asked the state court system for them to be "removed from the record."

She also mentioned she's been accused of being "too compassionate", but should have been more sensitive to the victims in these cases.
