Report recommends hike in ferry fees

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) Alaska's Southeast Conference has recommended the state increase the cost of riding on the Alaska Marine Highway System.

The group is considering whether to turn the marine highway into a public corporation.  Legislative changes would have to be made first.

Several public meetings have been held and many contend a rise in rates will only cut into the amount of people that use the ferries.

Other plans include a new marketing plan to try and encourage users of the system among tourists.  A report shows only two percent of tourists come to Juneau via the ferry system.

The group also thinks the fleet needs to be expanded and modernized.
