Principal Paula Casperson and parent Kate Prussing, guests on a recent Capital Chat, talked to host Sharon Gaiptman about the big SAFE Graduation party for all graduating high school seniors this Sunday night, "The SAFE Graduation is a party that's put on by parents and community members, it's all funded through parents and community, and the idea behind it is to provide an event to the graduating seniors that is super fun, lot of energy there, and keep it safe."
It's a fun filled night with big prizes too, "The theme of it is paradise and they're encouraged to wear their Hawaiian clothes, there's going to be something called the money grab where the money is blowing around, and there's prizes being drawn every 15 minutes. There's things like paddle boards, tablets, speakers, and all sorts of good food. The party ends at 2:16 in the morning for the graduating class of 2016, and at 2:16 they draw from all the seniors that are there a prize for $2016."
Graduation Ceremonies are Sunday, "We have our graduation ceremony at 4:00PM on Sunday, the 29th. Our ceremony happens at JDHS, the doors will open at 3:00PM, and we're anticipating 140 participants. We will have a keynote speaker and this year is going to be a teacher who is leaving us, Sarah Hannan. The graduates selected her to be the speaker since this is her last year at JDHS. We don't have valedictorians at JDHS, we do have a student speaker, who is Grace Rodriguez. We will have a senior choir that preforms and a graduation orchestra. It's a nice community feeling to the event. We'll have school board representation and we continue to pack the gym. It is a ticketed event. Each senior receives ten tickets and for families that may need more we encourage them to reach out to their classmates and tell people not to worry. We often have tickets turned in at the door, so show up and we're not going to turn you away."
Again Graduation Ceremonies are Sunday afternoon in Juneau.
