Schools request help from ferries

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) The Sitka School district plans to meet with Alaska Marine Highway officials to try and work out a better schedule.

The Sitka Daily Sentinel reports that the district could save money if students attending extra curricular activities in southeast Alaska could take the ferry more often.  The ferry costs are usually half the price of a plane ticket.  The average ferry trip to Juneau is around $90 and the average plane ticket up to $200.

The schools plan to advocate for a schedule where students can leave on Thursdays for events and return on Sundays.

Activities Director Susan Ross said about two out of three students travel off the island for an activity during the school year.  Athletic teams can take between two and seven trips off the island.
