Scientists come up empty in Valdez

WHITTIER, Alaska (KINY) Scientists with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center found no new species in a study of waters near Valdez, Alaska.

The center reported that no foreign species, nonnative to Alaska, were found during a review.  The survey was an effort to train local volunteers on how best to identify foreign species that could be headed toward Alaska.  For example, the European green crab, found in San Francisco, has been tracked northward.

The Alaska Journal of Commerce reported that researchers used crab traps, mesh nets that can capture microscopic organisms, conducted dive surveys and used other methods to search the water.
