Fairbanks, Alaska (KINY) The national chain announced it was pulling out of Alaska last week and shoppers tried to take advantage this weekend.
The lines were long in both Fairbanks and Anchorage outside Sam's Club this weekend as shoppers took advantage of last minute deals. The stores announced that it will close its three Alaska stores on Jan. 26 at the latest.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported that hundreds of people visited the Fairbanks warehouse on Friday for a liquidation sale. Sam's Club is the largest bulk wholesale store within 350 miles of Fairbanks.
63 of the stores will close nation wide about 10 percent of the company. The closure could help Costco. An Alaska based trucking firm, Sourdough Express reported this weekend that they will make weekly Costco Runs from Anchorage to Fairbanks to meet the demand.
A petition is also circulating online that urges Costco to open in Fairbanks to pick up the slack.
