State flags flown half staff June 3rd for Dutch Harbor Remembrance Day

    Date marks 74 years since nearly 80 people killed, 42 civilian prisoners taken to Japan

    (Juneau, AK) -- Governor Bill Walker ordered flags lowered to mark the anniversary of the Japanese attack on the Aleutian port during World War II.

    The bombing of the Navy base at Dutch Harbor on June 3rd, 1942 - along with invasions of the Attu and Kiska islands - were a prelude to The Battle of Midway, which began the next day.

    Nearly 80 people were killed in the bombing of Dutch Harbor, and 42 civilians on Attu were taken to Japan as prisoners.
